Norwalk, CT, April 22, 2010: BookExpo America (BEA) organizers have announced that they will join forces with the American Booksellers Association (ABA) this year to jointly sponsor the ABA’s hugely successful Opening Plenary session. Both BEA and ABA recognize the value in combining efforts to create a major event of interest to all convention-goers. The Opening Plenary session will take place 8:30am – 10:00am on Tuesday, May 25th, thus setting the tone for the BEA and ABA conference tracks which will get underway at the Javits Center immediately following the gathering. BEA and ABA agreed to move the CEO Panel to the already established early morning event as it will provide considerably more space and because the subject speaks directly to an issue of concern to the entire publishing community. Both BEA and ABA believe it is important to bring the entire convention together for this event.
The subject of discussion is the “Value of a Book,” which stems, in part, from an Op-Ed piece that appeared in The New York Times (January 2, 2010) by Jonathan Galassi, President of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, titled There’s More to Publishing Than Meets the Screen. BEA and ABA officials acknowledge that this is a watershed year for change in the industry, and it is critically important to get leaders and opinion makers with different interests and from different segments of the industry together in one room to discuss the many aspects of “value” in books.
Mr. Galassi will moderate the panel, which will include:
- Bob Miller, Group Publisher, Workman
- Esther Newberg, Executive Vice President, International Creative Management (ICM)
- Skip Prichard, Chief Executive Officer, Ingram
- David Shanks, Chief Executive Officer, Penguin Group (USA)
- Oren Teicher, Chief Executive Officer, American Booksellers Association (ABA)
- Scott Turow, Author, Incoming President, Authors Guild
The Opening Plenary will be an all convention event and is open to all badged BEA attendees.
